Class Folded Star Hot Pad



Join Marj to make an insulated pot holder or hot pad for your kitchen!  Class includes round and square versions, and you can choose fabrics to match your decor or upcoming holidays. These make fun gifts, too!  Confident beginners on up.

Be sure to read the entire class page, as you will need to complete the homework at the bottom of this page before you arrive.

In an effort to keep classes affordable, we ask that you purchase all supplies and materials from Bernina We're in StitchesBefore purchasing materials, check to make sure that the class minimum of 3 students has been met. Students are eligible for a 10% discount on supplies purchased for class; online customers should make a note at checkout listing name of class and which items apply to have the discount applied manually.

By signing up for a class, you agree to in-class photography, which we use on our social media to promote the class experience to others.

Supplies needed:

Folded Star Hot Pad pattern (round or square)

Four different fabrics for the front; any combination of 1/4 yard cuts or fat quarters will work.

2 1/4" strip (width of fabric) for binding (or increase one of the 1/4 yard cuts to 1/3 yard)

9" square of backing fabric or another fat quarter

9" square of batting or InsulBright

Roxanne's Glue Baste It (2-way application version)

Clover Hold It Precision Stiletto

Aurifil monofilament thread or cotton thread that matches the color of the center fabric (use cotton thread in the bobbin, either way)

Wonder clips or pins

Sewing machine (cleaned, oiled, and threaded) with foot pedal and power cord

Open toe foot (Bernina 20, 20C, or 20D...other brands check manual)

Walking foot for binding 

80/12 Jeans needles 

Good cutting scissors

6 1/2 x 24 1/2" rotary ruler (or similar), rotary cutter, and mat

Small rotating cutting mat optional, but helpful

Waxed paper

Prairie Pointer Pressing Tool optional, but helpful; we will demonstrate this in class

Travel iron (or regular iron) and pressing mat strongly recommended; you will be doing lots of ironing!

Homework to complete before class:


Press and starch all fabric.  This is very important.

Cut and label your fabric as listed in the pattern except binding and optional hanging loop, which we will cut in class.

Fabric 1: Cut (1) 2" square and (4) 3 1/2" squares

Fabric 2: Cut (8) 5" squares

Fabric 3: Cut (8) 5" squares

Fabric 4: Cut (8) 5" squares if you're making the round star
              Cut (4) 5" squares and (4) 6" squares if you're making the square star

Backing: Cut a 9" square
Batting/ InsulBright: Cut a 9" square


Skill Level: Beginner
Skill Details: This class is for the confident beginner who has completed a few projects successfully. You need basic knowledge of your machine and stitches.
